The AFL (Australian Football League) is Australia’s only fully professional men’s tournament of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Committee, AFL is also responsible for controlling the legislation of the game, also acting as a sports management agency. Known for its former VFL (Victorian Football League), the tournament was founded in 1896 as a separate tournament from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), and the opening season begins the following year. Aiming for the national tournament, VFL went beyond Victoria in the 1980s and began another major expansion in Australia, renaming it to AFL in 1990.

Currently, the league consists of 18 teams across 5 of Australia’s 6 states. Tasmania is an exception), though there was a lot of support for moving and creating teams in Tasmania. The competition promotes the sport in all Australian states and mainland territories and abroad, held in New Zealand and China. The AFL season currently consists of a 23-round regular (or ‘home and away’) season that runs in Australian winter (March-September). The team with the best record since the home and away series will be awarded a “Minor Premier”. After that, the top 8 teams will culminate in the playoffs in a four-round final series at the AFL Grand Finals held annually at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The winner of the Grand Final will be The Premier League Cup is awarded as “Premier”.
